My Neighbour Totoro wins six Olivier Awards
The stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli animated Japanese film won the most awards of any production at this year’s event.
The landmark production of My Neighbour Totoro has won at total of six awards at this year’s Olivier Awards, including Best Entertainment or Comedy Play and Best Director.
The staging of the celebrated 1988 animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki was brought to audiences at the Barbican by its original composer Joe Hisaishi with the RSC, adapted by playwright Tom Morton-Smith, in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV. It was first announced in April 2022 and broke the Barbican’s box office record for most tickets sold in a single day.
We recently announced that Totoro will return to the Barbican stage this autumn.
The winning categories are:
- Best Set Design:** Tom Pye**
- Best Costume Design: Kimie Nakano
- Best Director: Phelim McDermott
- Best Entertainment or Comedy Play
- Best Lighting Design:** Jessica Hung Han Yun**
- Best Sound Design: Tony Gayle
